Acer Pentium II Red Hat 6.2 server

This Acer desktop plays a significant role in the HomeComputerMuseum.

Originally, this Acer desktop came with either Windows 98 or Windows NT and was intended as a workstation. In the museum, we have equipped this computer with a Linux Red Hat 6.2 installation, and it serves as the dial-up server for several computers in the museum. Through this computer, the Internet is routed between the 56K6 modem and the 100Mbit internet connection.

Linux Red Hat is a distribution whose first version was released on November 3, 1994. Version 6.2, as it runs in the museum, dates from April 3, 2000, and was the first version that allowed the CD installation to be downloaded from the Internet.

Red Hat is among the first generations of Linux distributions, although Slackware is even older. This distribution was a pioneer in the use of the RPM package format and laid the foundation for several other distributions, including Mandriva Linux (formerly known as Red Hat Linux with KDE), Yellow Dog Linux (started as Red Hat Linux with PowerPC support), ASPLinux (a version of Red Hat Linux with improved support for non-Latin characters), and CentOS.

From 2003, Red Hat ceased releasing new versions of Red Hat Linux and shifted its focus to the business market with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The last release, Red Hat Linux 9, officially saw the light of day on April 30, 2004.
